Unfortunately the memory of these illustrious saints is often perverted and blasphemed today by those who seek to force their own agenda upon the Church. In Yale professor John Boswell published the book “Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe” in which he argued that the Byzantine rite of adelphopoiesis, which mentions the martyrs Sergius and Bacchus, was in fact a Church-sanctioned service of homosexual marriage which the saints had undergone, and he even used an icon of Sts. Sergius and Bacchus on the cover of his book. Although his research has been debunked time and again, his argument is repeatedly resurrected by those seeking to introduce homosexual marriages into the Church. Patrick Viscuso is a priest and canonist of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in America who has written numerous scholarly articles in the area of Byzantine marriage and canon law. Viscuso defends the truth of historical Orthodox practice against the claims of Boswell, and in doing so honors the memory of Sts. Yale professor John Boswell’s book purports to find precedents for homosexual marriage, particularly in Eastern Orthodoxy during the late Byzantine period. His main contention is that the Byzantines regarded the rite of adelphopoiesis, a Greek term translated as “same-sex union” by Boswell, as a form of marriage contracted between two males and blessed by the Church. It is beyond dispute that there are rites for adelphopoiesis contained in Byzantine manuscripts dating from the ninth to the 15th century.

Russian and American Dating Styles Russian Men Most Russian males strongly believe that their calling in life is to protect and provide for their family, to support their parents, children, and wife. It is a society where traditional gender roles still exist. Chivalry still lives on here and men are used to opening doors, carrying heavy bags, and helping women in other ways. A Russian man is a romantic at heart and family and children are usually crucial to him. Many will not accept a marriage unless children are a part of the future.
Unlike in many Western countries, Russian men place great importance on friendships and tend to build them up for years — friends often become as close as relatives.

I want to make sure to put it on my list of books to read when your translation comes out. The history of the 4th century would suggest precisely the opposite: Where orthodoxy is optional, sooner or later heresy and paganism will be proscribed. From the Edict of Milan to Theodosius, in other words. In a world with freedom of religion, someone who disagrees with the reigning orthodoxy is always welcome to join another church or religion with which they do agree.
Orthodoxy always should be optional in that sense. The alternative is living in a society which not only has an established religion, but demands adherence by force or coercion. Someone else made the point above, but the big elephant in the room here is modern methods of birth control. Which are not limited to the Pill: This is certainly true psychologically, if not logically.
And for the record, Hasidic Jewish culture is an almost entirely negative influence on any society in which it exists, whether in New Jersey or Israel. Right-wing nationalism, exclusivism, tribalism, dependency on the welfare state, unsustainably large families, men choosing to drop out of work and education to read the Old Testament, women and men covering themselves up lest they show a bit of hair….

March 18, Recently I attended an exceptionally enlightening national conference of the Gay Christian Network held in Florida. Not far from home, I decided to drive up for the day and check it out. It was not what I expected. There were over participants, many of them college age students or younger adults in their thirties. Their deep Christian faith was evident in the worship services as well as the panel discussions, lectures and even while socializing with friends in the hotel lobby.
The worship services were definitely Protestant in nature and did not particular draw me in as an Orthodox Christian, however, what astounded me was the lack of a single answer to the question:

The Difficulties of Dating in the Coptic Community Certainly one of most difficult elements of assimilation to endure is the relationship between men and women. To come from a country where there are so many taboos and rules of propriety involving the separation of boys and girls and moving to another country where it seems that anything goes is the ultimate definition of culture shock. The boy picks up the girl, probably after just getting his license the week before, and they go off alone.
The locations may vary from the movies to dinner at a restaurant to a house party or school dance. Although that little girl doesn’t look too happy that her boyfriend is playing the field, does she?

Physically beaten by your husband? And you sat still for that? I was so entrapped. We had lots of money, but I had nowhere to go. I had nothing in my name. I had lost all my friends. I had parted with my family. I had lost my identity. I was living in my own country, but I was a foreigner in my own home. Did you consider leaving the marriage? Yes, three times I tried to leave. Why did you come back?
Because he would come back and say, ‘Ill never do it again.

All that a feeling tells you is that you feel something. Most men who think about becoming priests think about the glamorous bits, like serving in front of the Holy Altar or providing wise counsel to those humbled by sin. The more mundane bits, like sitting through endless meetings or being patently ignored by most of the congregation, usually gets swept away with grandiose visions of being the next Elder Paisios or St.
If you succeed at passing through seminary which is almost guaranteed, but more on that later , and are ordained, there will be many people who will be gravely wounded by your failure if you pushed your way into Holy Orders without being honest about who you are and what you are actually there to do. Being deposed is painful and humiliating not just for you, but for your family and the parishioners whom you once served.
A gay person can marry someone of the opposite sex, who may or may not themselves be gay, and that has often happened. English-speaking Orthodox Christians are also uneasy about the current trend to use the word “man” to refer exclusively to male persons.
Lee Grady Have you prayerfully considered these characteristics when choosing a potential marriage partner? In response I received numerous requests to share similar guidelines for men who are looking for wives. These are the women I tell my spiritual sons to avoid: Christians should not marry unbelievers. Apart from your decision to follow Christ, marriage is the single most important decision you will ever make. You need a wife who loves Jesus more than she loves you.
Put spiritual maturity at the top of your list of qualities you want in a wife.

The Orthodox Christian Marriage by Priest Alexey [now Hieromonk Ambrose] Young Orthodox Christianity is a way of life, not merely something we do on Sunday mornings and quickly forget when we leave church. A way of life is a whole coming together of habits and attitudes, ideas and actions: For us Orthodox, Christianity is our daily bread. Like a fish in water, we must swim in our Faith.
As followers of Christ, we take our whole direction from Christ and His Church, and not from the standards of today’s world. Most of us Orthodox Christians do not live in monasteries; we are married; we have homes, children, jobs. Among many married Orthodox there exists the mistaken idea that their following Christ does not require the same dedication required of the Orthodox monastic.

Several of my clergy friends liked and commented on a new online dating site called Orthodox and Single. My first reaction, typical for me, was skepticism. Who is this guy and what kind of a website is he selling? So, true to my nature, I emailed his Facebook page and asked him if we could talk.
Ekemini Uwan is a devout, orthodox Christian who admits she doesn’t “check all the boxes” for liberals or conservatives. Her conservative friends bristle at her bold opposition to white supremacy; her liberal friends scoff at her refusal to support gay marriage.
The same Trinitarian mystery of unity in diversity applies to the doctrine of marriage as it does to the Church. The family created by this sacrament is a small church. The Orthodox Church teaches that man is made in the image of the Trinity , and he is not intended by God to live alone, but in a family, except in special cases. And just as God blessed the first family, commanding Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply, so the Church now gives its blessing to the union of man and woman.
The mystery of marriage, in the Church, gives a man and a woman the possibility to become one spirit and one flesh in a way which no human love can provide by itself. The Holy Spirit is given so that what has begun on earth is fulfilled and continues most perfectly in the Kingdom of God. St John Chrysostom held that procreation is a normal feature of marriage, but not essential to it. Marriage does not always lead to child-bearing, although there is the word of God which says, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
So the purpose of chastity takes precedence, especially now, when the whole world is filled with our kind. At the beginning, the procreation of children was desirable, so that each person might leave a memorial of his life But now that resurrection is at our gates, and we do not speak of death, but advance toward another life better than the present, the desire for posterity is superfluous.
If you desire children, you can get much better children now, a nobler childbirth and a better help in your old age, if you give birth by spiritual labor.
